This course is meant to introduce the idea and rules of research and academic style writing, and support students in their studies, especially when doing their MA thesis. We'll look at what research is and why and how to write about it especially from the perspective of art.
The course happens in two parts. First we look at research, through lectures about what research is and some basic elements of research, and then more specifically at examples of the kind of research that would be most relevant for ViCCA students, through lectures and group assignments.
Then we look at writing - no, you write. For this part we divide the course in two groups, and each student will undertake to produce a text, individually. There will be meetings, and students will be paired to exchange texts and give and receive comments. The written text will be also the final assignment for the course.
The schedule will be as follows:
30.10. What is research?
1.11. Research questions and research plans.
6.11. Artistic research and Activism: Minna Henriksson.
8.11. Artistic research: Andrea Coyotzi Borja & Anna Jensen: "How to Life"
13.11. Feminist Curatorial research, "nynnyt": Anna Jensen, Hanna Ohtonen, Selina Väliheikki
15.11. Visual anthropology and ethnography: Taina
20.11. Groups and projects
22.11. Why write it up? And writing it up...
27.11. Exchange drafts

13.12 is reserved for final discussion and feedback, but we'll talk this date over when the course starts.
